cypress. An old legend tells of Cyparissus, a young friend of Apollo who died of grief because he killed Apollo’s favorite stag. Cyparissus was transformed by the god into a cypress tree. The Romans placed a branch of cypress in front of their houses when a friend died, and the Turks customarily plant a cypress on the graves of loved ones. Cypress wood can last for hundreds of years. Ac- cording to one story, the cypress gates of St. Peter’s Church in Rome lasted from the time of Constantine to that of Pope Eu- gene III—more than 1,110 years—with no decay.
