curtain speech; curtain call. Curtain speech refers to the final speech of an act or scene or at the end of a play. It is also a brief speech by an actor, author, or producer, etc., after the end of a play in front of the closed curtain. Curtain call refers to the ap- pearance of the performers or a single performer at the close of a play or opera in response to audience applause, as in “She took three curtain calls.” |
