公元1200年左右，“顺从更高权力或权威的实践或美德”； 14世纪末，“对命令或法律的顺从和尊重”，源自古法语 obedience “顺从，服从”（12世纪），源自拉丁语 oboedientia “顺从”，抽象名词，来自 oboedientem（主格 oboediens）“顺从的，服从的”，现在分词形式，源自 oboedire “服从”（参见 obey）。1930年开始用于狗训练。
