15世纪早期，“一种提示”（现已过时），来自14世纪的古法语 instinct 或直接来自拉丁语 instinctus “激励，冲动，灵感”，是 instinguere 的过去分词的名词用法，意为“激励，推动”，来自 in- “进入，到，关于”（来自 PIE 根 *en “在”）+ stinguere “刺，刺激”，来自 PIE *steig- “刺，刺，刺穿”（见 stick（v.））。
“动物直觉知觉的能力”是从15世纪中期开始的，源于“自然提示”的概念。 “自然倾向”的一般意义首次记录于1560年代。
