古英语 heap "一堆（东西）； 众多，人群"，源自西日耳曼语 *haupaz（也源自古撒克逊语 hop，古弗里斯兰语 hap，中低地德语 hupe，荷兰语 hoop，德语 Haufe "堆"），起源不明。这个词族可能与古英语 heah "高"（见 high）有关，但《牛津英语词典》认为它可能与拉丁语 cubare "躺下"有共同起源，而 Boutkan 则认为它可能根本不是印欧语系的。
俚语意思"旧车"可追溯到1924年。早期它的意思是"邋遢的女人"（1806年）。作为美洲印第安人英语中的一个特征词，意为"很多，大量"，可追溯到1832年。
