elision (n.)

"切断或削减"，特别是在说话或写作中"切断或压制字母、音节或音素"，始于1580年代，源自拉丁语 elisionem（主格 elisio），意为"切除、挤压"，在语法学中指"压缩元音"，是 elidere（见 elide）的动作名词。

在韵律学中，"单词末尾的元音在下一个单词的元音（或 h)之前消失或被忽略" [圣茨伯里，《英语韵律手册》]，如莎士比亚的

Do't, and thou hast the one half of my heart ;

Do't not, thou splitt'st thine own.

但通常也指单词内元音的压缩，如"vi(o)let"、"di(a)mond"、"wat(e)ry"、"splitt(e)st"。这是古代诗人们喜欢、必要、且可怕的做法。
