第一次世界大战于1914年开始时几乎立即被应用（“英国已经在第一次世界大战中与法国站在了一起”——匹兹堡新闻报，1914年8月2日）。World War I 于1939年被创造出来，取代了 Great War 成为最常用的名称； First World War 、World War II 和 Second World War 也都是从1939年开始使用的。古英语中有 woruldgewinn 、woruldgefeoht 这两个词，都可以翻译为“世界大战”，但“world”在这里的意思是“世俗的，尘世的”。
