14世纪中期， ajournen，“指定一天，确定一天”（为召集或重新召集组织机构），源自12世纪的古法语 ajorner “在约定的时间会面”，来自短语 à jorn “到另一天，到（规定的）一天”，来自 à “到”（见 ad-) + journ “日”，来自拉丁语 diurnus “每日的”，来自 dies “日”（源自 PIE 词根 *dyeu- “发光”）。
概念是设定重新会面的日期。意思是“结束会议”（有或没有重新召开的意图）始于15世纪初。指“一起去另一个地方”（1640年代）是口语。
