conchology (n.)

"大海贝壳"，最初指双壳类，15世纪早期源自拉丁语 concha "贝类，软体动物"，来自希腊语 konkhē "贻贝，蛤蜊"，也比喻为贝壳状物品（"耳道； 膝盖； 颅骨； 封印的盒子； 盾牌的旋钮"等），源自 PIE 词根 *konkho-（源头还包括梵语 sankha- "贻贝"）或者来自一个古希腊语之前的词。

自18世纪以来用于大型腹足类。作为佛罗里达群岛土著居民的名称（最初特指贫穷的白人），至少可以追溯到1833年，因为他们食用贻贝肉； 那里的首选发音（"kongk"）保留了古典发音。相关词汇： Conchate; conchiform; conchoidal。
