词汇 | alcatraz |
词源 | Alcatraz. The former high-security prison in San Francisco Bay takes its name from the island on which it is situated. Alca- traz Island was so named by an early Spanish explorer, who named it after the many pelicans he saw there, alcatraz being the Portuguese for pelican. First a Spanish fort and then a U.S. military prison, it was made in 1933 a federal prison for dan- gerous inmates from other locations. Alcatraz, closed in 1963, was nicknamed The Rock after the rocky island on which it stands. Among its many infamous inmates were Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly, none of whom managed to escape so far as is known. |
