词源 | to paint a house. To kill or assassinate someone. The expres- sion is used as the title of Charles Brandt’s expose “I Heard You Paint Houses”: Frank “the Irishman” Sheeran and the Inside Sto- ry of the Mafia, the Teamsters, and the Last Ride of Jimmy Hoffa (2004). The book’s title, in fact, comes from the first words Sheeran says Hoffa ever spoke to him. “To paint a house,” Sheeran explains, “is Mafiaese for killing someone, from the blood that splatters all over the wall . . .” |
