Ixion; Ixion’s wheel. Regarded in Greek mythology as the first murderer, King Ixion killed his father-in-law Eionius by digging a deep camouflaged pit in front of his palace and lining it with live coals. When Eionius came to collect the wedding gifts Ixion had promised him for his daughter Dia’s hand, Eion- ius fell into the pit and burned to death. No one forgave Ixion, or indeed spoke to him, until the great god Zeus himself finally took pity on him and purified the wretched wanderer. But the ungrateful Ixion repaid Zeus’s kindness by trying to win the love of Hera, the god’s beautiful wife, and bragging about se- ducing her. For this base ingratitude and insolence, a furious Zeus had Ixion bound to a wheel of fire, Ixion’s wheel, which would roll through the underworld in agony forever.
