ivy. The ivy of the Greeks bore golden berries and was proba- bly not the plant we call ivy today. Thought to prevent drunk- enness, it was also given as a wreath to the winners of athletic contests. Hedera helix, the common English ivy so widely culti- vated in temperate climates, is regarded as a symbol of everlast- ing life because it remains green in all seasons. |
