godfather. Since the late 1960s, when Mario Puzo’s The God- father (1969) was published, soon to become the basis for one of the most popular movies of all time, godfather has meant the don or head of a Mafia family or unit. Wrote Puzo: “Don Vito Corleone was a man to whom everybody came for help, and never were they disappointed . . . His reward? Friendship, the respectful title of ‘Don,’ and sometimes the more affectionate salutation of ‘Godfather.’ ” |
