Theophrastus. No one knows the real name of the Greek phi- losopher Theophrastus (ca. 37–ca. 287 b.c.). So eloquent was this pupil of Aristotle’s that he is remembered only by the name his master gave him: Theophrastus—meaning that he spoke like a god. Another godlike philosopher was the French vision- ary preacher and pamphleteer Catherine Theot (1725–94), who believed that she was the mother of God and changed her name (Theot) to Theos, “God.” Chilean poet Vicente Huidobro (1893– 1948) often signed himself “The God of Poetry.” Godlike was a nickname of American statesman Daniel Webster.
