Nordic. This is a word that has been much distorted in mod- ern times, especially by Nazi propagandists, who used it, like Aryan, to describe a vastly superior blond, blue-eyed “race” (Nietzsche’s “blond beast” type) inhabiting Germany. Actually the Nordic type properly describes Scandinavians. The word derives from the Latin nordicus, “northern.” According to Wal- ter Theimer, in The Penguin Political Dictionary (1949): “There is a Nordic type, making up about 70 percent of the population in Scandinavia, less than 20 percent in Germany, Holland and Great Britain, and less than 15 percent in the United States . . . The existence of a common Nordic-primitive people has never been proved.” |
