curse of Scotland. The nine of diamonds playing card. The name may have been suggested by the card’s resemblance to the coat of arms of the Earl of Stair, who was hated in Scot- land as a Judas for helping bring about the union with En- gland in 1707. However, there are many other possible deri- vations for this expression first recorded in the early 18th century. |
