词汇 | weasel words |
词源 | weasel words. “Weasel words are words that suck all of the life out of the words next to them just as a weasel sucks an egg and leaves the shell,” a writer explained in the June 1900 issue of the Century Magazine. The writer then gives an example: “ ‘The public should be protected.’ ‘Duly protected,’ said Gam- age, ‘that’s always a good weasel word.’ ” The term was applied to politicians in this first recorded use and has often been asso- ciated with politicians since then. |
