词汇 | the great unknown |
词源 | The Great Unknown; the Great Magician of the North. Few authors would appreciate such a designation, but Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832) was known as “The Great Unknown” be- cause for 13 years, beginning with his first novel, Waverley (1814), he published 26 novels anonymously or as “by the au- thor of Waverley.” Scott’s publishing partner, James Ballantyne, coined the nickname for him after Scott decided he did not want the novels confused with his well-known poetry. He was also called “The Great Magician (or Wizard) of the North” be- cause of his magical works. |
