词汇 | tall oil |
词源 | tall oil. “An Americanized Swedish-German hybrid,” this term illustrates the complicated ways some words are formed. As the magazine Progress Through Research (summer, 1948) put it: “The name tall oil is an Americanized Swedish-German hybrid. The Swedes, who were active in first developing tall oil, called it tallolja (meaning pine oil) because it is an oily material obtained from pine wood during the manufacture of paper. At the time, however, the term pine oil was already used in Europe and America to describe a different oil obtained from pine trees. To avoid confusion, the Germans, who were among the first to use tall oil extensively, coined the word Tallol, from the Swedish ‘tall’ for pine and the German ‘ol’ for oil. In the United States this became tall oil, the name by which the product is known today.” |
