stymie. Stymie, meaning to block or prevent, first recorded in 1902, had been a golfing term meaning to block the hole on the green with your ball (thus stopping an opponent from hol- ing his ball) since at least the mid 19th century. The golfing term, in turn, may derive from the Scottish expression not to see a styme, “not to see at all,” recorded in the 14th century, or the Dutch stuit mij, “it stops.” |
