Paper money used by the Confederates during the Civil War; also called graybacks. “During the Civil War . . . the original Blue Backs of the Confederacy (so-called in oppo- sition to Green Backs of the Union) soon became known as Shucks, a name sufficiently significant of their evil repute . . . ,” Maximillian Schele De Vere wrote in Americanisms (1871). Over a billion dollars’ worth of bluebacks and graybacks were issued by the South during the Civil War; the bills were worth about 1.7 cents in gold for each Confederate dollar by the end of the hostilities.
