nudnik; Phudnick. A nudnik is a man “whose purpose in life is to bore the rest of humanity,” according to poet Morris Rosenfeld’s essay on the subject. Nudnik, indeed, derives from the Russian nudna, for “a bore.” Leo Rosten’s The Joys of Yiddish says the recently coined Phudnik is “a nudnik with a Ph.D.” |
