ars gratia artis. Latin for “art for art’s sake.” The expression is famous as the slogan for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer since 1916, when publicist Howard Dietz introduced it along with the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer lion. Dietz also invented the MGM slo- gan “More stars than there are in heaven.” The French, however, used a phrase similar to ars gratis artis in the early 19th century, their l’art pour l’art meaning that art couldn’t or shouldn’t be in any way useful, could serve no moral or political purpose. |
