词汇 bickerstaff hoax
词源
Bickerstaff Hoax. Nearly all of Jonathan Swift’s works were published anonymously and he received payment only for Gul- liver’s Travels (£200). In the case of the Bickerstaff Hoax, Swift used the pen name Isaac Bickerstaff. Indignant when an igno- rant cobbler named John Partridge, claiming to be an astrolo- ger, published an almanac of astrological predictions, Swift parodied the book under the title “Prediction for the ensuing year by Isaac Bickerstaff.” In his parody, he foretold the death of John Partridge on March 29, 1708, and when the day arrived Swift published a letter affirming his prediction and giving an account of Partridge’s death. Partridge indignantly protested that he was very much alive, but Swift wrote what he called a “Vindication,” proving that Partridge was dead. Poor Partridge was doomed to a literary death as a result, especially when oth- er writers perpetuated the joke. So famous did the pseudonym Isaac Bickerstaff become that Richard Steele used it as his pen name in the Tatler. Benjamin Franklin later emulated Swift’s hoax in America.
