词汇 | weekend |
词源 | weekend. A relatively recent word, first recorded in England in 1879 and rarely used in America until the mid-1930s. Until that time the great majority of Americans didn’t know what a weekend was. For the most part they worked long six-day, 60- hour weeks, steelworkers (1923) and then Ford employees (1926) being the first five-day, 40-hour workers. |
