Murder, Inc. In 1940 law enforcement authorities arrest- ed a number of mob members, including Abe Reles, a Murder, Inc., lieutenant. Reles, fearing others would talk to the police before him, turned informer to save himself, providing details on hundreds of murders and sending many of his colleagues to the electric chair. Before completing his testimony against the highest-ranking mob bosses, Reles fell to his death from the window of a Coney Island hotel where he was under po- lice protection. He was thereafter called “the canary who couldn’t fly.”
