AAA. The AAA, standing for Agricultural Adjustment Ad- ministration, was among the first of the “alphabet agencies” (government agencies, administrations, authorities, offices, etc.) created for relief and recovery in the early days of the New Deal during America’s Great Depression. The New Deal itself took its name from Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention on July 2, 1932: “I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people.” Coined by Roosevelt’s speech writers, Raymond Moley and Judge Samuel Rosenman, the phrase incorporated ele- ments of Woodrow Wilson’s New Freedom and Teddy Roose- velt’s Square Deal. Among the many alphabet agencies spawned by the New Deal are the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps), FCA (Farm Credit Administration), FDIC (Federal Deposit In- surance Corporation), SEC (Securities and Exchange Commis- sion), and the WPA (Works Progress Administration).
