middle of the road. Toward the end of the 19th century this term came into use to describe political parties or factions of political parties that took a cautious, moderate position be- tween extremes supported by their opponents. Highways at the time were often unpaved, with untended roads whose left and right sides were well below the grade of the middle. After a heavy rain cautious travelers stayed in the middle of the road, which may have suggested the political phrase. |
