词汇 shrewd
词源
shrewd. Shrewd most likely comes from the name of the shrew, a small, mouselike animal with a long snout, common in England’s forests. Extremely truculent animals, shrews will often fight to the death over a bit of food, the victor eating the loser in the bargain. Thus a shrew became an evil, vicious per- son, especially a woman who scolded or nagged, as in Shake- speare’s The Taming of the Shrew, and the verb to shrew formed from this noun gave us the word shrewd in its past participle. Over the centuries shrewd lost its meaning of evil but retained the qualities of sharpness and cleverness that made the little shrew formidably wicked, so that today shrewd means keen- witted, clever, sharp in practical affairs.
