shrewd. Shrewd most likely comes from the name of the shrew, a small, mouselike animal with a long snout, common in England’s forests. Extremely truculent animals, shrews will often fight to the death over a bit of food, the victor eating the loser in the bargain. Thus a shrew became an evil, vicious per- son, especially a woman who scolded or nagged, as in Shake- speare’s The Taming of the Shrew, and the verb to shrew formed from this noun gave us the word shrewd in its past participle.
