shout. Shout, of course, means “to call out loudly.” It possibly derives from Old Norse skuta, “a (loud) taunt,” and has given birth since to such expressions as it’s all over but the shouting, the allusion being to the end of a boxing match whose outcome the crowd in the arena is protesting, and within shouting dis- tance, a short distance away. In Australia shout refers to a round of beers bought in a pub, “It’s your shout, mate” being the Aus- sie equivalent of “It’s your turn to buy the drinks, friend.” |
