mary. In the Melanesian pidgin jargon of the southern Pacific the word mary means “a woman,” as in “That fella him catch’m money belong mary.” (That man took the woman’s money.) Melanesian pidgin is also called Neo-Melanesian and beche-de- mer. Other examples of this pidgin include long way big bit (very far), sing-sing (a song or dance), pigeon (a bird of any kind), finish altogether (die), belly (any part of the body below the neck), and gammon (to lie).
