Antwerp, Belgium got its name, legend says, be- cause a giant who lived there used to hack off the hand (handt) of any traveler who couldn’t or wouldn’t pay a toll on entering the area, throwing (werpen) each hand into the water. But the city really is so named because it is “the city at the wharf,” Ant- werp, composed of the Dutch aan, “at,” and werf, “wharf.” |
