词汇 | sans-culottes |
词源 | sans-culottes. French supporters of the French Revolution in 1789 were called sans-culottes, which literally translates as “without breeches.” But the term has nothing to do with nudity. The revolutionaries went without the knee breeches that the royalists wore. These sans-coulettes wore trousers or long pants, which soon became popular everywhere. Many held out, how- ever. In America George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson all wore knee breeches, despite their revolutionary faith. James Madison was the first U.S. president to wear trousers. |
