yippie. A coinage from the initials of the Youth International Party that is said to have been coined by Paul Krassner in 1967. It has nothing to do with the much earlier (c. 1920) exclamation of delight of excitement yippi!, or for the cowboy cry yippi-ki-yi- yay. The Yippies were formed to protest the Vietnam War. Out- side the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1968, they nominated a pig (Pigasus) for president. See yuppie. |
