whortleberry. Whortleberry originated as the dialect form of hurtleberry in southwestern England. Hurtleberry, however, re- mains a mystery etymologically speaking, though there have been attempts to link the hurt in the word to the fact that the blue berry could resemble a small black and blue mark or “hurt,” on a person’s body. Both words refer to the berry Vac- cinium myrtillus of the blueberry family, and our word huckle- berry probably derives from hurtleberry—which makes Mark Twain’s famous character, perhaps aptly, “Hurt” Finn. |
