Whoops! Traced only to 1925 by the O.E.D. (Volume IV, Supplement, 1986), whoops may be considerably older, though there is no proof of this. It is, of course, an exclamation of dis- may or surprise when one stumbles or recognizes a mistake one has made. The expression first appeared in a New Yorker cartoon, in the form of whoops-a-daisy; it isn’t recorded as whoops until 1937, in one of Ezra Pound’s letters, of all places. |
