词汇 | lightweight |
词源 | lightweight. British boxers who weighed under 154 pounds were called lightweights as early as 1850, although the Ameri- can lightweight division today is 127–135 pounds. Before that, in the 1730s, lightweight had been used in English horse racing to refer to lightweight gentleman riders. Both of these terms were the inspiration for the general expression lightweight meaning an unimportant or inconsequential person, which is first recorded in 1882. See heavyweight. |
