词汇 wooden o
词源
Wooden O. Shakespeare described London’s famous Globe Theatre as the “wooden O,” and his playhouse did have a doughnut shape. The Globe was built from timbers used in the construction of London’s first theater, which was built in 1576 on the north side of the Thames by actor James Burbage and torn down when Burbage’s sons decided in 1599 to build the Globe on Bankside in Southwark. Shakespeare had a share in the Globe and performed there. The auditorium of the Globe was an old inn yard. Shilling patrons sat onstage near the ac- tors, three-penny patrons rated stools in the balcony, while one-penny customers stood in the yard. Because the huge stage jutted into the yard, the actors found themselves with an audi- ence pressing on three sides. The balconies and stage were roofed, but the center inn yard was open to the sky. The original Globe burned to the ground in 1613. There are replicas today in London; Stratford, Ontario, Canada; Stratford, Connecticut; San Diego, California; Berlin, Maryland; and Odessa College, Odessa, Texas.
