词汇 | a citizen of the world |
词源 | a citizen of the world. A cosmopolitan person at home any- where. According to Plutarch, more than two millennia ago Socrates said, “I am not an Athenian or a Greek but a citizen of the world.” Others trace the words to Cicero, who in the first century b.c. wrote civem totius mundi, while still others pick Francis Bacon (“If a man be gracious and courteous to strangers, it shows he is a citizen of the world,” 1625), and some nominate the prophet Baha’u’L-ah, who a century ago declared: “The earth is but one country and mankind its citizens.” |
