a Jones. A Jones is a habit, especially drug addiction, the term arising in the drug culture among heroin users and passing into black slang as well. Whether there was any specific epony- mous Jones, man or woman, whose name is behind the word is not known; most likely it is just a use of the common family name Jones. The expression was first recorded about 1962 but is probably older. Claude Brown in Manchild in the Promised Land (1965) gave the following use: “Yeah, baby, that’s the way it is, I’ve got a Jones.” |
