diddledees. An unusual Americanism meaning pine needles. It has been suggested that since diddledees are sometimes used as kindling, they take their name from the diddledee tree or shrub of the Falkland Islands, which is also used for fuel. The term could have been brought to America by whalers a century or so ago. In various regions of the U.S., pine needles are also called needles, spills, pins, twinkles, straws, tags, and shats. |
