词源 | diddle. In its sense of to cheat or deceive diddle derives from the name of the main character in James Kenny’s farce Raising the Wind (1803). Jeremy Diddler continually borrows small sums from other people and fails to pay them back. Since the late 19th century diddle has been slang for to fornicate, making Mr. Diddler perhaps the only eponymous person in literature so honored.
