词汇 | dick smith |
词源 | Dick Smith. Dick Smith or Dick Smither refers to a solitary, selfish, cheap man with short arms and deep pockets, who would never order a round for other drinkers at a bar, though he’d always accept a free drink. The eponymous expression, first recorded in 1876 in the Congressional Record, may be based on a real Michigan lumberjack of that name. A quiet, unsociable baseball player named Dick Smith is another pos- sibility, as is Richard Penn Smith (1799–1854), a Philadelphia playwright who introduced romantic tragedy in the U.S. and was indebted to the work of several French and English play- wrights as models for his own work. |
