dewberry. Dewberries, which are trailing blackberries simi- lar to boysenberries, are a native American fruit, although they are cultivated today by gardeners in other parts of the world. Not that there aren’t native European varieties of dewberries as well. In Europe the dewberry can be traced back to the 16th century, when Shakespeare praised it. Its name, in fact, may be a corruption of “dove berry,” which it has been called for centu- ries in Germany, but it has long been associated with “dew” in English usage. |
