词汇 raven
词源
raven. The best-known bird in American literature takes its name from Old Norse hrafn for this member of the crow family (Corvus corax). We are all familiar with the bird in Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” (1845) who visits a student in his room and can speak only the single word “Nevermore.” This poem was recognized as a work of genius when it first appeared. Never- theless, Poe looked so bad when he personally submitted the manuscript to Graham’s Magazine that although the editors re- jected it they took up a collection of $15 to give him; he eventu- ally got $10 for “The Raven” but had to wait a year and a half for payment from the Daily Mirror. Ravens have been taught words since earliest times. They have generally been considered a bird of ill-omen, however, as in the old saying “The croaking raven bades misfortune.” But ravens have also been helpful to hu- mankind. While they were sailing west, Viking navigators re- leased ravens into the air. If the birds flew back on the same course, the Viking boats continued their westward course, but if the birds flew in any other direction, the Vikings followed them to new lands and new conquests.
