You gradually kill a debt (in the sense of resolving it) when you amortize it, for amortize, once more generally used than it is today, has its roots in the Latin mors, “death.” Chaucer wrote: “The goods werkes that men don whil they ben in good lif ben al amortised by synne folwying.” The word mortgage comes from the same source. |
