词汇 | a doozy |
词源 | a doozy. Something special, outstanding, as in “That’s a doozy of a coat you’ve got,” or, in the negative, “That’s a doozy of a cut you’ve got.” An Americanism first recorded in the early 1900s, it may be an alteration of daisy, influenced by the last name of the great Italian actress Eleanora Duse (1859–1924), who was indeed a doozy of a thespian. |
