crown of thorns. To wear a crown of thorns means to suffer from a terrible burden, such as pain, anxiety, or guilt. The refer- ence is to the crown of thorns placed on Christ’s head to mock him before his crucifixion (Matt. 27:29). There are also two creatures, a prickly spurge plant and a spiny starfish, called the “crown of thorns.” Dorothy Parker, summoned to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1952, had her own crown of thorns. She spent the evening before the dread day in a Washington, D.C., bar. There a loudmouth annoyed her, voicing his disapproval. Miss Parker rose and stared at him icily. “With the crown of thorns I’m wearing,” she said as she turned and left, “why should I be bothered by a prick like you?” |
