fornication [ME] Latin fornix, the source of this word, originally meant a vault or arch. In Rome prostitutes would ply their trade under certain arches such as those around the Colosseum (see colossal). From this fornix acquired the sense ‘brothel’ and then passed into Late Latin as a term for extra-marital sex.
